GAC launches logistics service in Sri Lanka
The GAC Group has embarked upon its first logistics venture in Sri Lanka, in partnership with leading international consumer products company, Unilever.
The contract with Unilever Ceylon Limited (UCL) came into effect on July 1 and is initially for the management of downstream supply chain of finished goods. However, within six months the scope of the project will expand to include raw materials and all transportation associated with UCL in the country.
The contract called for a seamless hand-over, which was achieved by the GAC implementation team led by David Williams. David brings a wealth of experience to the Sri Lankan operation, with hands-on experience with GAC's logistics operations in Dubai, Cairo and Sharjah. He is joined by management trainees Shanako Fernando and Clive Fernando, who have been given extensive practical training in third party logistics at GAC's Logistics Jebel Ali Distribution Centre in the UAE.
Dag Bore, General Manager of the Group's Dubai logistics operations confirmed that the new business in Sri Lanka is consistent with GAC's vision to develop logistics services internationally. The venture had got off to a great start, he added, having been on time and below budget. Already, performance has exceeded the client's expectations.
At a traditional opening ceremony to mark the start of the venture, GAC Sri Lanka's General Manager, Walter Rodrigo, lit a flame in the time honoured Sri Lankan tradition of wishing success and prosperity to the new venture.
Further details of GAC's activities in Sri Lanka can be found at www.gacsrilanka.com.

Qatar lifts monopoly on ship agency services
Gulf Agency Qatar has obtained permission from the Ministry of Communications and Transport to operate as a fully fledged ship agent at Qatari ports.
This brings to an end the state monopoly on ship agency services that has been in force at the country's ports for more than two decades. The new open policy, which aims to raise standards of service offered to owners and operators, has been welcomed by the industry.
Since the late 1990s, the company has been offering its services as Owner's Representative. Its new status will result in direct savings for Principals as GAC will be able to confirm sole agency fees covering its entire gambit of services.
With immediate effect, GAC will offer full agency services at all Qatari ports, namely:
- Doha: general cargo, car carriers, containers and supply vessels
- Messaied: general cargo, car carriers, containers, hydro carbon tanker, chemical tanker, LPG tanker. Bulk sulphur, bulk urea, bulk ammonia, bulk steel and supply vessels

Cruising on with GAC
GAC has established a dedicated task force to tackle the challenges presented by rapid growth and change in the cruise industry in recent years.
The profile of the average cruiser is changing, and the demand for cruises is reaching mass market levels.
Although the traditional older passenger, touring the Mediterranean or Caribbean, is still important, an increasing number of younger cruisers are seeking new, more exotic destinations. Statistics reveal that the average American cruise passenger is now only 46 years of age. The rise in the number of people opting for a vacation afloat also extends to the luxury end of the market.
To meet overall growth projections, 54 new cruise vessels are currently on order offering a total of 98,000 new berths. This represents an investment of USD 15.6 billion.
Operators are broadening their horizons and, throughout GAC's areas of operation, new cruise terminals are being developed. Dubai and Hong Kong are prime examples. Also, many state tourist authorities are establishing special cruise promotion teams.
GAC has recognised the potential of the non-traditional cruise destinations. This was demonstrated last year when GAC Jeddah handled the first ever call by a cruise ship carrying tourists other than pilgrims to a Saudi Arabian port. GAC now handles 30 per cent of all cruise calls at the Jordanian port of Aqaba. In the Far East, GAC will start handling cruise calls in Cambodia early next year.
The company already handles a number of cruise vessel calls, mostly at non-traditional ports, and expects the number to increase in line with the popularity of these new destinations.
To ensure an effective response to the increasing demand, GAC's cruise project team has recruited key staff from Greece, Hong Kong, India, Singapore, Sri Lanka, UAE, UK and USA. The team has already initiated a number of marketing projects to highlight the Group's cruise agency services, including:
* participation in the Miami Cruise convention
* representation at the Genoa Ferry and Cruise convention
in September this year
* a cruise agency promotion on both the GAC Group website (www.gulfagencycompany.com) and the Internet portal www.Cruise-Community.com
* major advertising mailouts to key individuals in the cruise industry, worldwide
As new opportunities and challenges arise in the cruise industry, GAC will ensure that operators in this rapidly growing sector are provided with the quality services for which the GAC Group is known worldwide.

The clinching of GAC's first worldwide port agency alliance deals has established the Group as a truly global partner.

Exmar is part of the Belgian CMB group, and is owner/operator of a fleet of 45 gas tankers.
Tankers International is a newly established tanker pool formed by first class tanker owners, currently operating a modern fleet of 47 VLCCs.
Lars Heisselberg, Group Marketing Director, says that GAC is committed to and believes in the benefits of agency alliances for Principals and agents.
"The two new alliance contracts firmly place GAC at the forefront of alliance concept developments," he added.
"This achievement demonstrates the professional interaction between GAC's hub and Marketing teams, and is a tribute to their hard work to meet and consistently exceed the expectations of our Principals."

Mangalore lies halfway between Cochin and Mumbai, where GAC already has well-established offices. Mangalore port is well protected from the open sea and facilities include ten berths, seven for general cargo plus an iron ore berth, an oil jetty and a crude oil jetty. There are plans in place to add eight dry cargo berths, two more oil jetties and a coal berth.
All international communications with GAC Mangalore should be routed through the company's head office in Cochin.

GAC brings Africa into its regional structure
In response to business growth, the Gulf Agency Company has set up an African region to cover the Group's expanding activities in Angola, Egypt, Nigeria and South Africa.
This brings the number of GAC's regions to five, the other four being the Middle East, East Mediterranean, East Asia and the Indian subcontinent.
These regions together provide shipping and transportation services on four continents and serve the needs of more than 7,000 Principals. The new African region has its headquarters in Alexandria.
GAC first set foot in Africa in the early 1960s when it entered the Egyptian market. Nationalisation of shipping agency services soon forced the company to close and the Six Day War and subsequent closure of the Suez Canal kept operations at a low level. However, in 1979, with ships once more steaming through the Canal, the Group set up its Suez Canal Transit Service, based in Athens. In 1995, GAC Egypt was established in readiness for the reopening of the country's ports to private shipping agency services. Privatisation came into effect three years later and GAC Egypt is now a thriving business, with busy offices in Alexandria, Cairo, Port Said and Suez.
The Group has been active in sub-Saharan Africa for more than 20 years, going back to the birth of Gulf Agency and Shipping (Nigeria) Ltd in 1978. This company is now a leading agency organisation in West Africa, with 130 staff in nine offices.
Further expansion came in 1998, when new companies were set up in South Africa and Angola. The Angolan operation initially dealt with the country's crude oil agency business but is now expanding into dry cargo.
In South Africa, two branch offices opened within just nine months of the establishment of the Cape Town head office and GAC's South Africa bunker operation covers all the country's ports, as well as others in East and West Africa.
The new region's founding Director, Hakan Granander, who also heads the Indian subcontinent Region, says African maritime trade has witnessed tremendous development in recent years and the development is ongoing.
"Africa has great potential for growth in all aspects of shipping and transportation and we are looking forward to an expanding future in the region, in partnership with our Principals," he says.
